It is not the often seen Kenyan landscape of savannah and flat-topped Acacias, but harsh, dramatic terrain. The people from this area, the Samburu, are similarly dramatic to the outsider. Impala, gazelle, giraffe and hartebeest grace the landscape and the waters of the MaraRiver are home to crocodiles and hippos. We are up early for a game drive before breakfast to search for predators hunting their prey and to take advantage of the morning light which is exceptional for photography. Later we return to our lodge for a hearty breakfast before meeting our naturalist guide for a mid-morning ‘nature walk” to learn more about this unique park. We end the day with an evening game drive.A spectacular way to view the game and the landscape is by floating above in silence in a hot-air balloon. We leave Kenya today and cross the border at Isebania into Tanzania where we meet our Tanzanian guides(Picnic Lunches will be provided from Kichwa Tembo Camp). Our journey today takes us over the remote yet stunning countryside of the Grumeti region of the Serengeti.  After a delicious picnic lunch, we continue on to our lodge arriving in the late afternoon.Tanzaniais an Africa in miniature. This stunning country contains a kaleidoscope of landscape, wildlife and people that is infinite in variety. Boundless stretches of savannah are dotted with herds of game – wildebeest, zebra, gazelle and every other herbivore you can think of; a lion or cheetah stalking through the tall dry grass; warriors dancing in the warm hues of sunset; stretches of silver beach fringed with palms swaying in the warm ocean breeze; dawn breaking the early morning mists over shimmering deep blue lakes; rivers snaking their way through parched land, ribbons of green on either side celebrating the joy of life with all the animals around; rich tropical forests filled with the rioting sounds of life that somehow stays invisible; a monolithic snow-capped peak rising out of and floating majestically over parched and dusty plains Overnight: Serengeti Serena Lodge (LDBB)

Day 11: SerengetiNational Park

A cooked breakfast is included at the hotel. A great day today as we explore the legendary Serengeti savannah for the ‘Big Five’ as well as the famous herds of wildebeest and zebra on our morning and afternoon game drives. The great plains of Serengeti are where endless streams of wildebeest and zebra pour south towards Ngorongoro or north towards the Masai Mara. Our game drives will cover the varied habitats and eco-systems of the Serengeti. Tonight a special treat as we enjoy fine dining in an authentic African bush dinner setting. Overnight: Serengeti Serena Lodge (LDBB)

Day 12: Serengeti National Park

A cooked breakfast is included at our hotel this morning. Today we enjoy another full day of exploration of this magical place unlike any other in the world. Besides the awe-inspiring game-viewing that East Africa offers, it also offers an insight into many fascinating cultures that, even today, live as they have done for thousands of years. One such culture is the Masai, and, on our travels for the next couple of days, we will get a glimpse of the lifestyle and habits of these striking people and come to feel that we are visiting somewhere very special indeed. The southern plains of the Serengeti actually lie in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area where Masai live. Masai still live life in the traditional manner, with their flocks and herds sharing the plains with the migratory animals and their attendant carnivores. The Masai do not hunt or eat wild animals. Instead their traditions preach of harmony between man and nature. Overnight: Serengeti Serena Lodge (LDBB)

Day 13: Ngorongoro Conservation area

A cooked breakfast is included at our hotel this morning.       We drive across the Serengeti this morning to Olduvai Gorge, known as the” The Cradle of Mankind.” It is here where Mary Leakey found early human remains dating back almost 1.75 million years. We take time to visit the small museum before continuing onto to our lodge at Ngorongoro. This evening enjoy a glorious sunset and views of the crater from our lodge on the crater’s rim. Overnight: Ngorongoro Serena Lodge (LDBB)

Day 14: Ngorongoro Conservation area

A cooked breakfast is included this morning. Visiting the crater is one of Africa’s great safari highlights. The crater is a natural paradise and a vast array of animals and birds inhabit this Eden, whose pastures are fed by permanent water sources on the floor of the caldera. Our 4×4 safari vehicles will take us down the steep walls of the caldera into the primeval paradise of woodlands and plains and lakes and rivers that shelter over 20,000 animals! After our safari, we continue to LakeManyara and our hotel Unlike the other protected areas in the region, Ngorongoro is not a national park but a conservation area. As a result, the land is managed not only for the benefit of the natural flora and fauna but also for the Masai people who are permitted to live in the area with their cattle sharing the grazing with the indigenous grazers.  The crater hosts a remarkable wildlife spectacle. Contained within these walls are microcosms of so many of the eco-systems of this part of the world. There is savanna, bush land, forests and lakes, inhabited by the same range of game, from elephant to lion to wildebeest. There is even a soda lake for the flamingos and in the green season small numbers of wildebeest migrate through. The crater has permanent water too. The only absentee of note is the giraffe, which cannot manage the steep slopes. Overnight: Ngorongoro Serena Lodge (LDBB)
